“What do you mean, I can’t go in?”

“Nobody is allowed into the testing area past the designated time,” the security guard replied curtly, while his coworker glared at me coldly. “I’m only a few minutes late!” I pleaded, attempting to press forward, but was roughly pushed back by the man who had spoken to me. “Please make an exception for me. I doubt the others have even sat down yet, let alone actually began taking the entrance exam!” “No exceptions,” the surly guard said, expression hard and unrelenting.

It felt as if my life was flashing in front of my eyes. I had spent most of my life unsure of what I was going to make of myself. My family wasn’t around very much, and I ended up spending much of my childhood with my grandmother who lived in the countryside. In terms of goals, I never really had any and I wasn’t forced to do anything I truly didn’t want to by her. So, when the time came that I had to chose what I wanted to do with my life, I had no idea what it was I wanted to devote my life to. Most of my free time was devoted to figuring out this great mystery. To some people, the choice was simple, yet there I was, completely lost. It wasn’t until I made one of my rare visits to the city that it suddenly dawned on me.

I was lost in thought, carried away by the tides of people in a crowded Japanese city, where the streets were swarming with people buzzing off to their jobs or errands with purpose while I was still figuratively lost. That was, until I heard a single voice cut through the crowds. It was as if I was shot through the heart with an arrow of truth. Looking up, I found myself staring at a massive screen on the side of a skyscraper, displaying the most beautiful man I had ever seen, and from the speakers issued forth the words, if you could use such a rough word to describe them, of the most perfect song I have ever heard. The way he sang, the way his lips moved, the feelings that coated them, they were all perfect. It was such as moving experience. That was the moment I decided what I was going to do with my life. I was going to learn how to write music beautiful enough for that man with the beautiful raven hair and shining blue eyes with the voice of an angel to sing. One day, even if it killed me, even if it left me broke and homeless, that was what I was going to do. That was my purpose in life, even though I had no idea who he was or even his name. I had spent much time on learning how to play the piano with my grandmother and learning how to read music. Those times I spent with her learning were my fondest memories of when I was young. So, why not commit myself to something I loved?

But now all of that emotion and devotion was about to be torn to pieces and tossed away like rubbish. My dreams were a shattered mirror, and the pieces were falling down around me like the snow that was swirling down today. I was breathing heavily, fighting back tears but failing utterly, the wind stinging both my eyes and my lungs. It wasn’t fair. Karma was such a bitch. This day was as dreary and depressing as the day I had found my dream was bright and warm. Why me? What had I done bad to deserve this? I tried my best to be a good person. But this was happening anyway. Not fair, not fair…

“Hey, guys, can’t you cut her some slack?” a youthful but decidedly masculine voice rang out in the silence of the winter air. A warm arm enveloped my shoulders protectively. “She really isn’t all that late. I called ahead to let the staff know that the traffic was horrendous because of the unexpectedly bad weather and they said it was fine. Letting her come along with me won’t be that bad, would it?“ Turning to look at my unexpected savior, I found myself staring at a young, fiery haired boy with similarly colored eyes and a bright, smiling face that looked out of place in the harsh winter surroundings. He glanced down at me, as he was several inches taller, and he winked. I grinned back at him, feeling much better to have someone on my side. His warm body pressed next to mine was also very reassuring, but embarrassing at the same time. He was close enough that I could feel the expansion and contraction of his chest as he breathed. I hoped that the flush of red on my face would be attributed to the cold air.

The guards looked at each other uneasily, doubtful expressions etched on their faces. One made a move to pull out his phone. “Don’t bother,” an alluringly deep voice said from behind the scarlet haired boy and me, causing me to jump in surprise. A man with tousled, shoulder length gingery blonde hair strolled up to us, followed by a pair of black suited men, which I supposed were body guards. Apparently recognizing this man, the two security guards blocking our way bowed their heads. “This young woman is late because she stopped to help a young child who was lost in the cold to find her mother,” the man continued with his low, melodious voice. It was apparent that he had strict voice training during his life. He stopped next to me and gave me a heart stopping smirk. But even more enticing were his strikingly blue eyes that stood out against his pale complexion. Even as sheltered a girl as I was, I could tell he was a man that was used to having his way with women. With his gloved hand, he delicately took hold of my own and pressed an umbrella into it. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was my own umbrella that I had misplaced earlier around when I found the young girl curled up on a park bench crying.

“Th-thank you,” I stuttered.

“I happened to be driving past you and the girl when you found her and escorted her to her mother,” he explained, noticing my confused, suspicious expression. He turned back to the guards. “I also have arrived late. Will you refuse me entry as well?”

One of the guards received a call on his phone, but the conversation was concise.

“No sir, Ren Jinguji,” said one of them. They waved for us to follow them as they hurried towards the school building. “Yes!!” The boy with red hair exclaimed as he let go of me and jumped into the air excitedly before hurrying to follow the guards.

I, however, rolled my eyes and muttered, “No exceptions my ass,” before continuing.

The gingery haired man laughed softly, a grin gracing his lips. “My, the little lamb has a mouth on her.“ Frowning at his use of the word ‘lamb’ as a term of endearment, I continued walking in silence to the looming building of Satome Academy, a prestigious school for only the best of the best of the performing arts. I swallowed the lump in my throat. Now that the mess of gaining admittance was over, the real test was about to begin, and I had to place in the top 200 in order to pass. It was a steep cliff to climb, considering the sheer amount of applicants the school received. I became nervous just thinking about how many people I would have to score better than in order to attend. A hand on my shoulder stopped me in my tracks a little ways from the entrance to the building. A curtain of gingery hair fell around my face as the man with startlingly blue eyes bent down and pressed his warm, soft lips against my forehead gently, while delicate fingers caressed my cheeks and wound their way through my hair.

“W-w-what?” I sputtered stupidly, at a loss for thoughts, words, and reactions. While my face had been flushed from before with the pretty red-haired boy, it was nothing in comparison to how much I was blushing now. You could probably fry an egg on my skin for how hot I felt.

“You seemed a bit tense, so I decided I’d give you something else to worry about,” he said with a wink before continuing. He paused after taking a few steps, noticing that I wasn’t following, as I was frozen to the spot, incapable of processing my thoughts, and said, “You may want to continue following if you’d like to join us for the test. It’d be a shame for you to miss it after all of that effort.“ His words unfroze me and I began following once again. He was right. I wasn’t as concerned about the test anymore. I was MUCH more occupied with other thoughts at the moment. This school had already proved itself to be full of interesting things I couldn’t comprehend.
